SACRAMENTO, CA (KGO) — Thousands of California kids would have to wait to start kindergarten under a bill passed by the state senate and headed to governor’s desk.

Under the bill, only children who turn 5 by September 1 will start kindergarten that school year.

The current cutoff is December 2. The state says about 100,000 children start kindergarten before their fifth birthday.

The bill’s sponsor, Palo Alto Democrat Joe Simitian, says delaying enrollment would save the state $700 million a year.
