Online Professional Learning Modules for Teachers and Administrators

The online TK modules are divided up into four courses.  Course 1 has only one module.  Courses 2-4 have three modules each, for a total of ten online modules.

Each module in courses 2 –  4 contain additional presentations from the following researchers:

  • Douglas Clements, Ph.D.
  • Judith Schickedanz, Ph.D.
  • Linda Espinosa, Ph.D.
  • Ross Thompson, Ph.D.

Course 1

An Overview of Transitional Kindergarten for CA School Administrators includes:

  • Legislation and policy regarding transitional kindergarten
  • The benefits of transitional kindergarten for young children
  • The importance of age- and developmentally-appropriate practices in transitional kindergarten programs
  • How to best support transitional kindergarten teachers
  • Key resources to support transitional kindergarten implementation

Course 2

Module 1: Social-Emotional Development: Self, includes:

  • The importance of social-emotional development
  • Research on the social-emotional development of transitional kindergarten students

Module 2: The Integrated Nature of Language and Literacy, includes:

  • The importance of providing integrated language and literacy experiences in transitional kindergarten
  • The integrated nature of language and literacy in the Preschool Learning Foundations and connections to the five key themes in the California English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy and English Language Development (ELD) Framework for TK and kindergarten

Module 3: Supporting English Language Development, includes:

  • Why focusing on English language development in transitional kindergarten is important for young English learners
  • The stages of second-language acquisition and levels of English proficiency

Course 3

Module 1: Social-Emotional Development: Social Interaction, includes:

  • Social-emotional development foundations for social interaction
  • How to promote social interaction in the areas of environment, instruction, and assessment

Module 2: Language Development, includes:

  • Language development and its role in cognitive development, reading achievement, overall school performance, and social relations
  • The continuum of language development across the preschool learning foundations and the kindergarten content standards

Module 3: Supporting Number Sense in Mathematics, includes:

  • Why focusing on number sense in transitional kindergarten is important for young learners
  • How the TK classroom environment supports mathematics development

Course 4

Module 1: Social-Emotional Development: Relationships, includes:

  • social-emotional development foundations for relationships
  • ways to support social-emotional development for ALL students

Module 2: Supporting Geometry in Mathematics, includes:

  • why focusing on geometry in transitional kindergarten is important for young learners
  • how the TK classroom environment supports mathematics development

Module 3: Foundational Skills for Reading, includes:

  • the role of foundational skills in early literacy
  • the continuum of early literacy skills across the preschool learning foundations and the kindergarten content standards
