The Atascadero Unified School District is developing a two-year program for kids who need time to develop academically, emotionally, physically and socially before entering kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten is designed for the district’s youngest incoming kindergarten students — children whose birthdays fall between Sept. 3 and Dec. 2.

According to Barbara Boud, the district’s director of curriculum, the program is intended as “a bridge between a flexible environment and the more structured academic setting of kindergarten.”

Transitional Kindergarten will be voluntary.

Interested parents can attend an informational meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of San Benito Elementary School, 4300 San Benito Road in Atascadero.

Call Boud at 462-4213 for more details.
